Over 160 characters — statesmen, poets, philosophers, women of Rome, ordinary people — each with their own voice, temperament and life story, rigorously reconstructed.

How it works

Press, speak, listen. That’s it.

No multiple-choice drills, no flashcards: a real conversation, as with a native speaker — because the best way to learn to speak is to speak.

I

Choose your interlocutor

The patient old schoolmaster to begin, Plautus to laugh, Cicero to debate, Seneca to reflect. Three levels: from your first sentences to the full Latin of the authors.

II

Press the microphone and speak

Even just «Salve!» will do. They understand you even when you stumble — and correct you the way good teachers do: by rephrasing, never by scolding. Under every reply, a transcript of what they understood.

III

Hear Rome answer

A spoken reply in Ecclesiastical pronunciation — or in the restored classical one, in beta — at the pace you choose. Replay it, slow it down, ask «quid significat?». And next time, they will remember you and your conversations.

The three ways Three ways to speak Latin. One single app.

Whether you start from scratch or read Tacitus straight through, there's a way for you. All three with the same voice, the same pronunciation, the same characters.

COLLOQVIA PERSONARVM

Speak freely

Free conversation with over 160 characters of Rome. Choose your interlocutor, press the microphone and talk about whatever you like, at your level: they understand you even when you make mistakes, answer you in Latin and correct you by rephrasing, never scolding. And next time they remember you and your conversations.

ITINERA

Guided journeys

Themed journeys across the map of the Roman world, with increasing difficulty. Stage after stage you talk with a character, complete small conversation missions and unlock the next one along the road. At the journey's end, a laudatio written for you. They're the best way never to stop.

The method

Not a toy. A serious tool for living Latin.

Sermocinando was born inside the living-Latin movement, built by people who have spoken and taught Latin for years.

INGENIVM

The English word engine comes from the Latin ingenium — we built the original. INGENIVM is our proprietary language engine, the fruit of months of philological work: it governs pronunciation and stress (by the penultimate law), the historical registers and the characters’ memory, on top of state-of-the-art generative AI. You choose the pronunciation: Ecclesiastical, the living voice of the tradition, or the restored classical one, in beta. You decide at first launch and can change it any time in the Settings.

Characters with historical dossiers

Each figure knows their own life and works — and knows nothing of what came after. Ask Caesar about his Rhine bridge: he answers. About the Ides of March, he cannot: for him they have not happened yet.

Comprehensible-input pedagogy

Three calibrated levels (Tiro, Discipulus, Peritus), correction by recasting, simplified paraphrases on request: the principles of language acquisition applied to Latin.

Genuinely private

No social accounts, no tracking, no leaderboards. Your voice is used only to generate the reply, then deleted. People learn better without judges.

A GrecoLatinoVivo project — the school of spoken classical languages.

FAQ

What everyone asks

I haven’t spoken Latin in years (or ever): is this for me?

Yes: the Tiro level is built for near-beginners. The old schoolmaster Aurelianus speaks slowly, with simple words, repeats himself, and asks one question at a time. When you slip, nobody rubs it in: he recasts the correct sentence and the conversation moves on. It is the opposite of an exam.

Which pronunciation does it use?

You choose: at first launch you pick between the Ecclesiastical pronunciation — the Church’s living tradition, the one the voices render best — and the restored classical one, honestly labelled beta, because perfect vowel quantities remain an open frontier for any speech synthesis. You can switch any time in the Settings; stress follows the penultimate law in both.

Is what the characters say historically reliable?

Every character carries a rigorous biographical dossier: dates, works, family, events — and an impassable time boundary (Cicero does not know the Philippics; Caesar knows nothing of the Ides). When they don’t know something, they say so. No invented dates.

What happens to my voice?

It is processed by INGENIVM only to generate the reply, then deleted: never stored, never reused. No cookies, no tracking, no ads. Your statistics stay in your browser.
